My paternal grandfather fought in WWI in what was known as the “Sportsman Brigade” (part of what’s now the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry) – Conn Smythe was in the same regiment (yes, that Conn Smythe, of hockey and Toronto Maple Leafs fame). He was a bombardier so he wasn’t in the trenches and going “over the top” as such, but was shooting the big guns; he fought at Passchendaele and Vimy. I never met him but I was able to do some research on him (naturally!) to learn a bit more about his experiences.
